We’ve answered some of the more common queries we get here, if we haven’t answered your question, get in touch

QHow much do you charge for design?

The charges applicable to design are based on the time spent and will vary from job to job, the more complex the design element the more time we will allow.

Before we commence working on any project we will scope it with you and quote based on the brief incorporating the design costs.

Should you be looking for design work only, our standard rate is $150 per hour.  Once we understand your brief and requirements we'll be able to give you at the very least a guide price for the design element.

A design inquiry can be divided into many individual sections such as 3D Modelling, Shop Drawings, Imaging, File extraction, rendering and other. We work with you to ensure that the most effective process is followed to get the best solution.

QWhat are the skillsets of your team?

Our talented team comprise degree and tertiary trained Industrial designers, mechanical engineers, CAD specialists and highly experienced tooling specialists. We have assembled a team who can deliver the end to end solutions that our clients are looking for and we’re always looking to enhance and add new resources to the Black Lab engine.

And where we don't have the in-house skills we source from our extensive network to ensure we provide best in class.

QWhat type of files do I need to provide for you to produce my part/design?

You don’t necessarily need to supply us with files to get something manufactured at Black Lab but if you do have access to CAD software the best files would be DXF/DWG files if the parts are to be Laser cut only or STEP / IGS / .SLDPRT / .SLDASM files for parts to be bent in our Brake Press.

If you have some images or logos that you wish cut out on the parts you can also supply a vector based EPS. If you are not sure whether your file is suitable please give us a call to discuss.

QWhat type of products have you manufactured?

We have designed and manufactured a vast range of Light fittings, machine guards, bracketry in general, architectural, civil and mechanical products just to name a few.  We have a diverse and extensive portfolio in Point of Sale units working with some of Australia leading retailers and brands.  To see more visit our Case Study and Gallery pages.

Present us with a concept or challenge and we will find the best solution for you taking into account your brief on quality and cost.

QWhat types of metal do you work with?

We have never bumped into a metal we cannot work with. The most common materials we work with can be listed as: Stainless Steel (with all its variations of grade and finishes), Hot Rolled Steel, Cold Rolled Steel, Galvanized Steel, Zinc, Color Bond Steels, Aluminium, Copper and Brass.

We also work with partners to incorporate other materials where needed into projects, like wood, acrylics, printed graphics etc.  So best to ask and we'll let you know what's feasible.
